A1 Japanese Steakhouse sits in the strip center anchored by IHOP at the intersection of RT. 1 and Oxford Valley Road, Fairless Hills. It is one of the older sushi/hibachi houses, run by Chinese ownership and because of location and age, one of the less expensive operations. While the quality of the experience is a step down from the more modern Mt. Fuji, Sakura, Oishi, Arirang, etc., joints found throughout lower Bucks County, the difference is not so great as to make it unworthy of your dining out dollar, but is noticeable.

What do I mean? A1 is carpeted wall to wall. They doubtlessly hide the remains of years of food tossing by hibachi chefs entertaining customers with food flips aimed for your mouth. They would have to shampoo the floor weekly to keep the place with passing grade. They don't. With each grill housing its own grease trap, it is dubious that it is emptied and cleaned regularly. Yet, the health inspectors allow the business to remain open, so it is up to you to be vigilant.

Still, the food served looks and tastes good. Our salmon fillets (2 each) were fresh and presented well with sides of fried rice, mushroom soup (few in the small bowl) and grilled mixed veggies. Plenty to eat and even take home without ordering anything more. They even comp everyone 3 grilled shrimp. Nice touch. Their bar offers mostly national brand beers (Sam Adams Boston Lager) as well as some of those fancy ass fruity sweet things in hurricane glasses. So, if your policy on cleanliness is, "Don't ask, Don't Tell," you won't have a problem with A1.

One suggestion, salt free soy sauce for the chefs as they squirt and cook. Standard soy sauce tends to make everything have a similar taste, detracting from the natural flavors that should predominate.

I've been coming here for years! Always liked the food and service. I usually get the hibachi chicken with fried rice. Their fruit punch drink is good too.

I would do zero stars if I could. We've come for years back when Tom was a cook. The food and service used to be great. Lately the service is awful and the food is even worse. Today we order a sushi roll to which we ate two pieces of the roll but could not eat anymore because the ginger tastes like mildew. When addressing it with Quan who claimed to be the owner he said he didn't care we ate some so he would t replace or refund. You have to eat some to taste it. Otherwise we wouldn't have known it tasted like mildew. Quan was so rude and not willing to make things right. Lost a customer for life. Also a cockroach was in my friends food. They seemed unphased. This place sucks now

I am really a snob about sushi -- SUPER picky and it's my favorite food on earth. We just moved from CT and have been systematically trying all the local places and haven't found any replacement for our old Connecticut favorite. And then we found this place. Let me tell you, I'm hugely critical about freshness, and this place was incredibly fresh! The fish was so amazing, and you can tell the sushi chefs at the sushi bar take enormous pride in what they're serving. All the young waitstaff were super prompt and attentive as well. We have found our new sushi spot .

Came for the regular sit-down part of the restaurant during lunchtime (for the lunch specials, of course), not the hibachi. Service was good, but the waiter seemed disinterested and distracted at times.

We got the seafood udon, shrimp tempura bento box, and shrimp tempura and spicy tuna rolls. Pretty standard stuff.
